It's been a whole week since I blogged last- crazy! But I've been too busy out here in sunny, gorgeous California! It's snowing in Provo, so it's been good to be not there. Anyway, I have a few minutes, so I thought I'd update the world (or at least the very few people who read my blog) on what I've been up to lately!
I'm in California on a trip with about 70 people from the BYU Landscape Management program, including our professors and BYU Grounds people. We came to participate in PLANET SCD (See previous post Pest Management for more information) and to spend a few days in sunny California. The event was over the weekend; I placed 2nd in my event, which was fabulous and astounding. When they announced it, I was totally floored. Also, I did a beautiful job of being a social butterfly at the career fair, and landed several interviews, and two internship offers for this summer.
Today, we spent the day at Huntington Gardens, which was gorgeous. So many lovely things were growing there! And tomorrow, we're going to the beach! So, I'm going to soak up some lovely sunshine! And also, I plan on enjoying the lovely company of my funny friends in my major...

Mickey Rooney & the Ponies
This is our band name. We are currently in the market for instrument playing people, but Stephie and I have the vocals pretty well covered, probably. We even have worked up a set list:
- Breakfast at Tiffany's
- 50 Nifty United States
- My Favorite Things
- Celebration
- Spice Girls (any, and all, of their songs)

For My Friend...
I was talking to a dear friend the other day, and this quote came to mind, but I couldn't really put my finger on it. So I wanted to share it with her now, because I found it!
Our deepest fear is not that we are inadequate. Our deepest fear is that we are powerful beyond measure. It is our light, not our darkness that most frightens us. We ask ourselves, Who am I to be brilliant, gorgeous, talented, fabulous? Actually, who are you not to be? You are a child of God. Your playing small does not serve the world. There is nothing enlightened about shrinking so that other people won't feel insecure around you. We are all meant to shine, as children do. We were born to make manifest the glory of God that is within us. It's not just in some of us; it's in everyone. And as we let our own light shine, we unconsciously give other people permission to do the same. As we are liberated from our own fear, our presence automatically liberates others. So, there you are, my dear. Love you lots- now, start glowing, huh?

Text Messages
I have to admit, I rather like texting. I like that it lets me communicate necessary information quickly and accurately, and I like that I can send quick love-note type messages to people at any time during the day, and they'll get them, and know that they're loved! But sometimes text messages can be a bit ridiculous, like when it takes six hours to have 5 minutes worth of pointless conversation.
Last night I went out with a couple of friends from home, and one of them brought another one of his friends. I guess this guy doesn't have a fabulous history with girls or something, but he was very nice, and kind of fun. Anyway, so this afternoon just before church I got a text message from my buddy from home, and a ridiculous conversation was born:
Friend: So what do you think of my friend?
Me: He was nice... Why?
Friend: Think he was cute?
Me: I wasn't paying attention for that. I'm still basically holding on to being in love with someone else.
Friend: Haha ok, im just trying to hook you up homie
Me: Thanks, friend, but I'm still healing from the last one.
Friend: Yea its cool no worries
Me: Thanks for looking out for me, though!
Ok. So what does this teach us about text messages? Well, first off, we can learn that people have atrocious grammar when texting. Also, they sometimes try to sound cool, which is entertaining, but not necessarily effective. "Homie" just sounds silly in text format. Also, this conversation started at about noon, and ended at about 6:45. That is nowhere near six-and-three-quarters-of-an-hour worth of communication.
Also, it would have been a much more awkward conversation to have on the phone, so it probably wouldn't have happened in a world without text messages, saving me from mortification. Except that I'm not mortified or anything close to it. So I guess what it all boils down to is this: if there were no such thing as text messaging, I would have had one less silly story to ramble about!

Pest Management
A week from now, I will be in California and will have recently completed a competition in Pest Management at the Professional Landcare Network (PLANET) Student Career Days (SCD). Yikes. About a month ago, I knew nothing about pests, and even less about the management of them. Now, however, I have committed to memory a list of 125 plant pests, their common and scientific names, their common host species, control methods, etc...
My very least favorite part about cramming for this competition event has been the ID part. Because, you see, not only do I have to know all of the information about these pests, but I also have to be able to identify them based off of the damage they do or what they look like at any one of their many life stages. Without the ability to identify them, I will absolutely fail. 0%. Maybe even -10 %.
Now, this would not be so miserable for me if it weren't for the Scales. I mean, other things are gross, but the 19 different varieties of scale just push me over the edge.
Scale is a very small insect. It crawls around on plant stems until it finds a nice spot, at which point it sinks its little sucker-tongue into the plant, latches on, and starts sucking.
Once a scale has chosen a home, it starts leaking. Or maybe oozing is a better description. Either way, it excretes a sticky mess of liquid that hardens into a protective shell. At this point, it has become an utterly useless parasite. It just sits sucking away the life of the plant until winter. Then the female scales lay their eggs under their shells, they die, and the eggs live in a nice cozy shell until spring, when they wake up to do the same thing as their nasty parents.
And I have to be able to distinguish between 19 different types of scale. Like Cottony Cushion Scale:

Or Magnolia Scale:

Or, my personal favorite, Wax Scale:
Anyway, I am tired of scale. It's not my favorite thing at all.

Bloggers Anonymous
I am an official blogging addict. I love it. I love letting my feelings explode all over into words. And, I am pretty sure that it is fitting that post 12 of the week should be about my posting obsessiveness. It's a little crazy.

Plotting- Update 2
This is more difficult than I thought it would be... turns out you shouldn't post things on your blog that you don't want your readers to get curious about. But I'm going to continue to post updates on the progress of "Operation ---- ----- ---- -- ---- ---- -- -----" in spite of the curious questions...
PHASE ONE continues to drag agonizingly on... It's annoying me, actually, but I absolutely CAN NOT move on to PHASE TWO yet. That has to wait a while more. Irritating? Yes, highly.
But the integrity of this mission may have been severely compromised last night when, under great duress, a few key words might have slipped.

On the Topic of Being in Love...
Which, believe it or not, is a fairly different topic than I wrote about on the 16th of this month.
This whole "in love" thing is a very complicated emotional state to be in. "In love" confuses me. It can be the most fabulous thing in the world, especially when all is going well. Then it just feels like the world loves you, and you can cheerfully return the favor. Disappointed and in love is a bad, bad thing. Life is all grey clouds and irritation, with a fair bit of melancholy weather thrown in there. Neither of those confuses me, though. When it's happy or rather not, love makes at least some sense. It's my current experience of being in a very persistent and one-sided version of love that has me puzzled.
Typically, I rebound out of relationships... hard. It's a little ridiculous, but after the brief bout of grief has passed, I become a ridiculous flirt, entirely heedless of reason for a few days. And I start looking up the previous boys that I've been interested in to see who's single and to check if I still think they're gorgeous. I don't know if I just need to be loved by someone, or what, but usually when disappointed in relationships, I react with lots of searching to fill that hole.
This time, I'm trying to rebound. Last night I flirted as hard as I could with a few guys, but it was hard! I mean, these are perfectly lovely boys, but I am simply not interested in being interested in anyone new right now. The night before last, I was searching through Facebook for some of the old boys... and the most emotion I could drum up was "oh, he's a cute person... I hope he's dating someone great" -total waste of time. Then I got distracted Googling for a certain individual, and anything else I could find connected to him. That was probably not the most healthy decision. So, in summary, my rebound action plan is failing me for the first time in my life, and as badly as I want to be frustrated by this fact, I'm not.
Because, you see, I'm in love. And I'm not ready to fall out of love with this one yet. He's everything I've ever been looking for. He is smart, and hardworking, and fun, and easygoing. He has finally taught me what my mother meant when she would tell me not to fall in love unless I was with someone who absolutely adored me. And, possibly most important of all, he loves the Lord more than anything else. Including himself, and including me.
Fortunately, I know something wonderful. The Lord loves him, too. More than I do. And, the Lord loves me, more than anyone else does. I know that eventually, when the time is right, my Father in Heaven will put both of us into the path of someone who will love us forever. And then, finally, maybe I'll be able to get over this young man who I still think I might be able to love forever.

Shrubbies
So, I didn't skip school this morning, even though I wanted to, and I am so glad! Instead, I went to Arboriculture Lab, and got to prune with my old shrub crew! It was way fun to get to work with Joel and Natalie and Kim and Mark and Evan and shrubs again! I miss being a shrubby.
That's what the tree pruning crew calls us- "the shrubbies." They say it in a derogatory tone, like it's a bad thing. They're wrong. Being a shrubby might be one of the best things I have ever done.
Shrub pruning taught me patience and perspective, and prioritizing. It helped me become a better leader, and a better student. It gave me confidence. I was able to associate with wonderful people who helped me realize that I am quite a wonderful person, myself! And, I am really good at shrub care, in case that's ever important.

Plotting- Update 1
PHASE ONE is really boring. It's making me quite antsy. I don't really know how to be this patient. Hopefully I won't blow Operation ---- ----- ---- -- ---- ---- -- ----- by being impatient.
I don't like making wonderful plans too far in advance... it's frustrating

Plotting
Do you ever feel like a secret spy, plotting sneaky plans for other people behind their backs? I do. I'm currently working on "Operation ---- ----- ---- -- ---- ---- -- -----," and it's making me feel very under-cover-ish.
The goal of this mission is pretty self-explanatory once you've read the title. I mean, "Operation ---- ----- ---- -- ---- ---- -- -----" isn't exactly cryptic, right. So... you all can extrapolate from that exactly what I'm up to.
So... PHASE ONE has begun. It's actually a pretty boring phase. It involves a lot of waiting. I'll be sure to update the world on the progress of my secret mission as the plan becomes further developed.
*Censored to protect the integrity of this mission

Dinner
So, it looks like I'm back to blogging about my latest adventures with food. A wonderful friend presented me with the lovely gift of lemon pepper a few weeks ago, and today I am cooking with it.
It smells so good in here. This is why crock pots are beautiful and yet tormenting. But in a few hours when I come home from work after a delightful walk in which I will add to my delightful tree journal, I will have delicious pork chops with red potatoes and carrots and caramelized onions and lemon-pepper/applesauce/worcestershire sauce all over them! Sounds a little weird, I know but, seriously- yum. It's going to be good, people.
UPDATE: It's 5:52 pm, and I was right- dinner was delicious!

On the Topic of Being Loved...
I have been super-loved this weekend. Which is good, because the weekend looked like it was starting out in a very lonely manner. But instead, lots of people have absolutely showered me with love. This 21st birthday has been fabulous!
Most importantly, my Father in Heaven loves me. He has my life and heart cradled ever so gently in his incredibly capable hands, and is guiding my path. I'm not really sure where He's leading, but for now that's okay; wherever I end up, as long as I have been following His lead, will be perfect!
I don't really know what else to write. I'm loved, and love it!

Birthdays!
Mine is Monday, and I am super excited! Today I got a massive package from my home. Seriously, we are talking HUGE! A whole 1728 cubic inches of pure joy, people! AND, at the top of it, I found brightly colored tissue paper- WOW! Talk about an exciting box! I'm trying to decide how long I can stand the anticipation before I have to open everything inside... especially the Banana Republic gift bag... I am exceptionally curious. There is a lot of brightly colored wrapping paper in there.
I am going out to dinner with my roommates tonight, and we are going to seriously celebrate. It'll be great! I love those girls so much. They take care of me no matter what kinds of messes or challenges I get myself into, and keep my fragile little heart very close. Which is good; I'm sick of fence-hoppers. This week has been a good one for that. School, work and love have produced so much stress, and a fair measure of heartbreak, but I know at least that these two love me, and will always, always, be there me. So, I am excited to go out and just laugh and be loved, and maybe flirt with a cute waiter or two.
Tomorrow I am going to dinner with my Smith family, and there is sure to be a cake. Yum! And- more love! They are the best. So good to me always.
Then Monday will happen, and it will be my birthday, and hopefully lots of people will love me that day. Lots of people love me every day- I desperately need people to approve of me- and so I'm sure there will be some love on my birthday.
That's all. I'm going to return to sitting anxiously over my big, brightly colored box now...

Faith
Some things in life are hard, and sometimes you have to make decisions that you don't like or understand. In consequence of these circumstances, I find myself once again single. Funny how that works, huh? I'm not really a fan of not knowing why things are happening, but I guess that's why I need faith in my life.
I know that my Heavenly Father has a plan for my life. I know that as I continue to listen to Him and to love Him, my life will work out better than I can imagine. Proverbs 3:6 says "In all thy ways acknowledge him, and he shall direct thy paths."So I will continue to acknowledge the hand of my Lord in my life, and all will be well.

A Variation on the Definition of the Word "Wonderful"
According to Webster's Revised Unabridged Dictionary:
In music, composers often create a theme (a melody that is used as the basis for the whole composition), or take one from another composer. They then create variations (different harmonies, rhythms, etc.) from the original theme. Hence, the "theme and variations" (i.e. Rachmaninoff's Variations on a Theme of Corelli). I am copying this concept to create my own variation on the above definition. While not musical, my variation makes me want to sing for joy.
Wonderful
Won"der*ful\, a. ridiculously easy to be myself around; accepting of all my silly quirks. b. talented at brightening my days through optimism and quickness of laughter. c. impresively hard working, with (mostly) balanced priorities. d. able to listen well, and ask the right questions; curious about important topics. e. smart, with a desire for teaching and learning. f. good at remembering conversations, even if only mentioned in passing. g. perceptive of my moods and feelings. h. willing to serve others. i. having a desire to be good, and spread goodness all about. j. cheerful. k. humble. l. curious. m. confident in expressing emotions, concerns, etc. n. decisive. o. lighthearted. p. full of compliments and praise of others. q. beautiful. See Marvelous, Precious, Lovely. -- Won"der*ful*ly, adv. -- Won"der*ful*ness, n.
Right now I am feeling exceptionally grateful for the wonderful people in my life. Especially my Mommy and my Daddy, and the siblings, and my roommates, and Braun, and some particularly dear friends.
That's all. Love you all.
Wonderful
Won"der*ful\, a. Adapted to excite wonder or admiration; surprising; strange; astonishing. Syn: Marvelous; amazing. See Marvelous. -- Won"der*ful*ly, adv. -- Won"der*ful*ness, n.

Things to Look Forward To:
There are lots of things going on in my life!
- I turn 21 in 11 days! Yay for birthdays!
- Student Career Days is in 20 days!
- I'm going home at the end of the semester- I'm not going to make a countdown for that, though. April 23rd through May 4th!
- This evening I get to hug Braun, probably! But if I'm going to do that, I need to get working on homework!

Squelched
I like that word. It reminds me of grape crushing. Imagine a great big barrel, full of grapes, being smashed as an old woman steps rhythmically up and down... squelch, squelch, squelch.
Fun word. Not such a fun feeling, however. And I'm sort of feeling it lately. It's a little dizzying. One minute I'm happy as a clam (never understood that expression) and the next- squelch- I've been a little crushed. Stupid, stomping feet.
Here's how it all pans out: I am ridiculously excited about my life. All joy and skipping and smiles, right? Other people are being pessimists, though. They keep telling me that my plans won't work, and that my enthusiasm won't last, and that I'm going to end up impoverished and alone on the streets... dying. Talk about squelching!
Okay. So maybe that's a bit of an exaggeration. No one has told me recently that I'm going to die of loneliness and starvation. But I feel like the rest of the world is less than perfectly excited for me. And also, they think I'm ridiculous and silly. With so much enthusiasm brimming over in all aspects of my life, I am in need of people who will share it with me. I need some of that joy to be reflected back at me, instead of sucked up like light trying to reflect in a dark room. I need some mirror-people to bounce a bit of joy back off on me!
Oh well. As soon as I get over this brief bout of irritation, I'll be back to beaming life and light and joy off on everything I see.

Progress
So, once upon a time it was President's Day weekend. And then it was Tuesday, and the weekend was over, and I thought I had just experienced the best weekend ever. Well. Then the next weekend happened, and it was even better- a "great weekend" record-breaker. Ok. So. Now it's Monday again, and I can officially declare it- the past weekend was the most amazingly wonderful weekend of my life.
So, what do all of these weekends have in common to make them so fabulous? Easy question: my new best friend, who I also happen to be dating. He's lovely. And as I get to know and love him more and more every week, the time we get to spend together becomes more and more precious. He's basically amazing. So fun to be around, and ridiculously sweet to me. Here's a secret- I think he thinks I'm more fabulous than I actually am. But that's ok. I don't mind being treated like I'm wonderful (ok, so really I love being treated like I'm wonderful). This weekend, among other things, we went to his family's house in Cedar Hills for Sunday dinner. That was way fun. I was super nervous, of course, that I would offend or annoy someone, or come across as obnoxious or stuck up, or any other thing that would be less than wonderful. But after I loosened up a little bit, it was fabulous. It was also quite delightful to see that Braun is the same beautiful person around his family as he is around just me. I loved that. And he wasn't at all shy about me, either (no one has ever kissed me in front of their mother before). It was the best Sunday dinner I've had away from my own family (adopted family included). And the rest of the weekend was lovely, too.
So, my weekends have followed a trend from good to better to best.
And that is what is called progress.
